BS West in Scottsdale Arizona
BS West was a legendary, two-story LGBTQ+ nightclub in Old Town Scottsdale that operated from 1988 to January 7, 2024. It served as a vital, welcoming safe space in the Phoenix Valley, hosting legendary drag shows, trans nights, and large-scale block parties.
Established on Fifth Avenue, the bar was originally tucked away in a hidden alleyway. In an era when LGBTQ+ spaces faced heavy discrimination, this discreet location was necessary to provide a safe haven for the community.
Co-owner Mike Fornelli took over the venue during Labor Day weekend in 1989. Over the decades, it evolved from a hidden, exclusively gay male venue into an open, inclusive, and multi-generational institution welcoming all members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.
Tons of my drag queen friends performed at this location over the decades. I was lucky enough to be a judge at one of the pageants about 15 years ago as the best selling author of drag books.
It was widely known for its high-energy environment, which featured shirtless bartenders, go-go dancers, rowdy karaoke, and a massive stage for its performers. It became so famous that celebrities like Debbie Reynolds and Rip Taylor were known to stop by.
Co-owners cited the profound financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic and skyrocketing operating costs in Old Town Scottsdale as major factors in the decision to close. After 35 years, BS West officially poured its last drinks and closed its doors on January 7, 2024.
Update: 1981, opened as JR's Hideaway with a luxury bar format. Plush carpeting, with sofas and aquariums upstairs.
Circa 1983, renamed Mr. B's. Mr. B owner was Tony Bartoli. He also owned Pumphouse and Tony B’s Bunkhouse (sold and renamed Pat O's Bunkhouse Saloon in 2002 by Pat Olivo).
1988, Vinnie and Tony revamp the bar to become BS West.
BS West got its name from the New York restaurant they owned called Bread Sticks when the original owners lived here. They, JT and Scott, later moved on to open Pookies in Phoenix.
